Dr. Kim Meredith speaks to our Pearson College UWC audience as part of Global Affairs.

Dr. Kim Meredith has spent significant time exploring the complexities of language and the tremendous impact they have on the communities we live in. Given the dozens of languages permeating the Pearson campus, her expertise provides a beacon for navigating this multi-lingual mini world. She shared that work with the Pearson student body in an interactive Global Affairs session on September 18th.

It created an opportunity for members of the community to share their linguistic resources, introduce themselves with the languages they speak and teach each other a foreign language. Muglish? Never heard of it? The only word is moo, but it requires a commitment to movement. Meredith made everyone experts in the nonsensical yet arguably most globally understood language on our planet.  The perfect practice of non-verbal communication for both speaker and listener.

Levity gave way to deep conversations about linguistic power. Participants reflected on how colonialism has led to inequities between languages, and students who have experienced different forms of linguistic oppression were able to share their powerful stories.
