A most unusual winter break on campus

In this most unusual year, even the break between term 1 and term 2, which usually sees every student either returning home to their families or staying with host families, saw a drastic change. Due to the current, global pandemic, all of our students stayed on campus and spent their three weeks over the holidays together as a community.

Members of the Metchosin Community and the Colwood Pentecostal church, each student received a little gift along with large trays of Christmas cookies for each student residence.

Adult community members signed up to lead a variety of on and off-site activities, such as soap making, biking tours, maks making, carolling and other holiday related craft and fun activities. The above image shows the soap making workshop in full swing.

The first two weeks of winterbreak were organized and led by three students on the winter break coordinating committee, who closely worked with the administration team and their co-years to shape their own holiday experience.

One of the highlights for our students was certainly the excursions off campus, which were all organized according to local public health rules.

Ice skating in Langford, a visit to the Royal BC Museum, a bus tour to see festively decorated sights of Victoria, a trip to Shawnigan Lake School, who offered us access to their gym and skating rink and a trip to the local Wildplay Adventure Park in Langford, where students absolved a parcour supsended high up in the trees.

All students returned from these trips in high spirits.

The third week of winter break saw our students catch up on sleep, focus on acadmic work and slowly return to a schedule which would ease them back into their daily school routine. We are grateful to all the community members, donors, volunteers and companies who made this winter break extraordinary.
