COVID-19 | CAMPUS UPDATE
Given the complexity of the COVID19 pandemic and uncertainty about the global situation this summer, we will not be running PSYL in 2021. PSYL will be deferred to a time when we can convene safely, equitably, and in the spirit of the program. Until then, we will continue to build and re-imagine PSYL as a transformative learning experience that moves youth towards leadership for just futures.
The Pearson Seminar on Youth Leadership is designed to strengthen the role young people play in building a more just and equitable world. For 3 weeks in the summer, come learn with peers from around the world and inspiring educators in an immersive, experiential, and transformative program. Develop your capacity to build diverse and inclusive movements and teams working towards social and ecological justice.
We are grateful that we can gather, live and learn in the inspired setting of Vancouver Island, on the unceded territory of the Sc’ianew First Nation. At PSYL we learn on the shores of the Salish Sea, and amid British Columbia’s spectacular old-growth forests. We explore the ways in which this place is shaped both by global forces and its unique history, and the diverse forms of leadership required to move the needle towards justice and equity in this context.
After much deliberation, we recently made the difficult decision to not convene PSYL in 2020, informed by the realities and most probable trajectories of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Past PSYL participant pursues a UWC education and returns to the summer program two years later to inspire a new generation on the Pearson campus.
Do you remember Abbey Christ-Rowling, one of our host family volunteer members? And that’s absolutely not all she is: This extraordinary young woman made her dream of going to a UWC come true last January. We recently chatted with her about her first year at UWC Waterford Kamhlaba.
