It is that time of year again!  Applications for Canadians who want to attend UWC in 2019 (January 2020 for Waterford Kamhlaba) are open until November 15th.  The UWC National Committee of Canada, through volunteer-run chapters in every province and territory, selects students to attend the 17 UWC schools around the world.  There are currently over 100 Canadians studying at UWC!

At the UWC National Committee of Canada, we often get asked what kind of student we are looking for.  Students should be in Grade 11 and either 15 or 16 years-old when they apply.  UWC students are diverse in every possible way, but there are some characteristics that successful UWC students have in common:  They are determined, curious, intelligent, compassionate, and they have a real desire to live and learn in an environment where diversity is valued at its core.

“It is impossible to define what a UWC student is,” says Nina Moroso, the Executive Administrator of the National Committee of Canada.  “But I think for people who understand the movement, they know a prospective UWC student when they see one.  There is a certain something special that makes them uniquely suited to this educational model.”

How do we find these students?  That’s where the broader UWC community from and in Canada lends a helping hand.  We have volunteers attending educations fairs, going to talk at schools and clubs, and sharing information about UWC via their social media networks.  We know that most students apply because someone who knows about UWC recognizes that they might be a good candidate.  So, we consider everyone reading this a “UWC scout” and urge you to identify one talented, courageous young person and encourage them to apply to UWC before November 15th.

Through scholarship support and financial aid, the opportunity to attend UWC is open to any qualified candidate and selection is entirely merit-based. UWC continues to provide opportunities to students who desire and deserve this transformational education. Do you know a student who should know about UWC?
