Greetings from the shores of Pedder Bay.
Over the past few weeks, President and Head of College Désirée McGraw and I have worked closely together to ensure a seamless transition as we begin a new year and a new decade. As many of you know, Désirée recently announced that she will be winding down her term and returning to Montreal early in the new year.
As incoming Interim President and Head of College, I wish to acknowledge Désirée for the ambitious vision and passion for the UWC Mission that she lived every day on behalf of Pearson and its community. I know that many, in particular students and alumni for whom she has great respect and admiration, will miss her enthusiasm and commitment.
Maintaining the positive, forward-looking trajectory of Pearson is an obligation I intend to strongly support as Interim President and Head. In doing so, I am privileged to work closely with colleagues on the leadership team, with faculty and staff across the College and with volunteers and individuals from communities near and far who are supporters of Pearson.
On campus, I am looking forward to championing initiatives such as the in-depth review of our educational offerings led by Deputy Head and Vice-President of Education and Programming Heather Gross. Similarly, our cross-campus commitment to fostering an Indigenous Vision, linked appropriately and with humility to our support for Indigenous scholarship at Pearson and our ongoing relationship with the Scia’new First Nation, will only grow stronger.
While we work on campus and in the community to meet the overriding goals identified in our Strategic Plan 2022, the Board-led process to identify and select a new permanent President and Head will continue for the next several months. Led by a search committee of the Board and piloted with the assistance of Lucy Hayes of Perrett Laver, we are encouraging everyone who considers themselves part of the Pearson community to share their thoughts on the qualities that they would like to see in the individual who will lead the College as it approaches its 50th anniversary as Canada’s School for the World.
We have a strong team and an amazing network of worldwide alumni and supporters with a unity of purpose expressed in the UWC Mission. As we approach the holiday season and a new year, I share with you a sense of optimism and peace for 2020. I look forward to connecting with many of you in the coming months.
