By Deborah Walker, Pearson College UWC, Planned Giving Officer

Hello — it’s a pleasure to introduce myself through to you.

You may be wondering, what is a Planned Giving Officer? Well, very simply, I help people make future donations to the College; gifts that require a bit of planning. Most of these future gifts are bequests in the wills of our supporters.

You can find out more about making this type of gift on our legacy page which also includes information about the Lester B. Pearson Legacy Society.

When I recently joined the Advancement Office at Pearson, it was very gratifying to learn that about 85 generous individuals have already told us that they have made the decision to include the College in their future gift planning. On behalf of the College and all its future scholars, thank you so much for generosity. Commitments like these enable us to continue delivering upon the UWC mission for generations of students to come.

I have worked in philanthropy for more than 20 years and I have come to think of planned giving with this in mind — your will is like your autobiography.

It takes much forethought and planning to create this powerful document and in it you include people and causes that truly matter to you throughout your life.

Aspects of your life story are often revealed in charitable bequests. If you decide to leave money to something like the SPCA, it’s likely you’ve had a series of much-loved pets. If you give to the local hospital, perhaps you and/ or your loved ones have received special care there.

Educational institutions figure very prominently in bequest donations. This may come as no surprise to you — as part of the extended Pearson College UWC community, you know the life-long impact this special place has on its students! It is important that those who support the UWC mission of diversity, peace and sustainability would want to see that legacy continued.

If you would like to add Pearson College UWC to your “autobiography,” please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. I offer a variety of information and services on legacy gifts, including bequests, and can work with you to make your vision come to life. For example, I can help you craft appropriate and legally-correct wording that truly captures your wishes and can be added to your will by your lawyer or other professional advisor.

I look forward to hearing from you.
