An overwhelming theme amongst alumni is the close bonds formed with fellow students during their time at Pearson College.

One such lasting friendship was between Rattana Lao (better known as Amp) and Hillary Gladish. During a rare get together in 2009 the two sat down to reflect on their Pearson experience and recorded the following:

Hilary:  “I have been thinking lately of Pearson and of what it means to me. I think the greatest thing I got from Pearson was a sense of idealism, and the idea that a group of people could come together, and that they could be dynamic,  and they could be hopeful,  and they could work together to affect positive change - not only in their world but also in the wider world.”

Amp:  “To me, Pearson is the most influential learning experience in my life.  It gave me the opportunity to meet such a diverse group of people, the will to learn, and friendships which I can cherish for the rest of my life.  Most importantly Pearson gave me hope in education.  I am very thankful for having gone to Pearson and I hope many young and talented individuals can also have that experience.”

Amp arrived at Pearson at age 16, already knowing her career path would lead to “making a difference” in her home country of Thailand. After her studies at Thammasat University in Bangkok she won the King of Thailand’s scholarship to study. earning an MSc in Development Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Subsequently, she completed a Master of Research in Education and Social Science at the Institute of Education, University of London. Amp is currently completing her Doctorate in Comparative and International Education at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York.  Amp says “My Pearson experience did not finish on graduation- it is lived daily and continuously. When I returned to Thailand I quickly became involved in our National Committee. In each place I have lived or visited since I always touch base with PC and/or UWC alums. I count Hillary from Canada and Caroline from Kenya among my closest friends.

Hilary studied International Relations at Mount Allison University and then spent a year working in Kono, Sierra Leone with community groups developing agricultural projects for sustainable living. She returned to the Yukon to work for the Government of Yukon doing social and environmental assessment for proposed mining projects. Currently she is doing an MA in Environment, Development and Policy at the University of Sussex, Brighton UK. She volunteers as an English teacher for refugees and migrants as well as helping with a faith-based organization that assists with homeless people in Brighton.  Hilary keeps touch with fellow Pearsonites – and she and best friend Amp have managed brief visits in Thailand, London, the Yukon, Victoria and Ottawa.
